Battle of Marianna

Little Known Fact
Col. A.B. Montgomery (left) commanded
the small Confederate post at Marianna.
In addition to the troops outlined at left, the
following companies were attached at times
to the command at Marianna but did not
participate in any of the fighting:

Company E, 5th Florida Cavalry (Jeter's)
Company G, 5th Florida Cavalry (Milton's)
Company C, 5th Florida Cavalry (Gwynn's)
Luke Lott's Calhoun Home Guard
1864 Marianna was a much
smaller community than the
present-day Northwest
Florida city. Home to around
400 people at the beginning
of the war, the town was the
headquarters for a military
subdistrict encompassing
the territory stretching from
the Apalachicola to the
Choctawhatchee Rivers. Col.
A.B. Montgomery, the post
commandant, also
commanded the Confederate
defenses along the
Apalachicola River. In
addition, Marianna had a post
hospital, quartermaster
storehouses and government
stables, and was the location
of a "conscript" camp where
"conscripts" or draftees were
trained for service in the
Confederate forces.
